The Piarco International Airport considered to be one of the largest and most
modern airports in the Caribbean region after extensive development work, which was completed in
2001, allows the airport to facilitate the operations of nineteen international airlines that serve
twenty-seven international destinations. The airport was first opened on January 8, 1931 and is
located in Piarco, which is approximately 25 km east of the capital city Port of Spain, on the
Caroni plains and consists of two high speed taxiways and three connector taxiways. The airport was
also used by the United States Army Air Force Sixth Air Force and United States Navy air squadrons
during World War II.
The state of the art terminal houses 82 advanced ticket counter
positions and exceeds the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the
International Air Transport Association (IATA). A flight information display system which serves
all airport users and a baggage Information display system are also present in the terminal. The
terminal consists of duty free shops that carry a variety of items that range from perfumes and
cosmetics to eye wear and foot wear, a record shop, snack shops and an atrium where exhibitions are
on display complete with terrific entertainment.
