The Caribbean
The Caribbean is a fascinatingly beautiful part of the world spread over 7,000 islands along with an equally
large number of cays and islets. Some might have a better sense of recognition of the Caribbean islands under the name of West Indies. Of the huge number of
islands making up the Caribbean region, there as many as thirteen independent island nations, where most of the
other islands are either dependent entities or the disjointed land acquisition of other countries.
The present day face of the Caribbean is in utter contrast to how it all started, around the 15th century when
Christopher Columbus set foot on the pristine and unexplored islands. From that time, the gates to the Caribbean
were opened for people from all cultures and countries. Travellers and explorers from parts of America, China and a
host of European countries started making the move to the stunning islands of the Caribbean, and brought along
their respective cultures and societies which blended with time and emerged as the inimitable Caribbean culture of
the present times.
The Caribbean region has a history of slaves and pirates. African slaves were brought to these parts in large
numbers to work as bonded labour on the vast sugar and tobacco fields. Thus, the Caribbean has played to almost all
the prominent races of the old times, and parts of all these varied cultures are evident in the spirit of the
cotemporary Caribbean islands. This has had a major say in the emergence of the Caribbean islands on the tourist
maps of the world. The past few decades have witnessed a tremendous upsurge in the number of traveller and
vacationers who prefer to spend their money and time on a tour to the overwhelmingly beautiful and enchanting
Caribbean islands and soaking in the perfect blend of all the cultures of the world.
The Caribbean summers have become a metaphor that carries the essence of joy and sheer ecstasy. And this is
quite natural, considering the mesmerizing beauty of the Caribbean
islands with their dozens of beaches, each more attractive and lively than the other. The Caribbean climate is a perfect host for all those people who look towards the Middle
East for seeking refuge from the bitter cold winters. The Caribbean
islands boast of all the contemporary tourist facilities and amenities, right from top notch resorts to
underwater parks. And then, the Caribbean islands are not just
about days spent at the beaches, sipping some local rum cocktails. On the contrary, beaches form just a small part
of the total pleasure package when you visit the Caribbean
islands. You would be amazed when you hit the towns and visit the monuments and museums that try to capture the
glorious pasts of the West Indies. Also, the adventurous travellers would be thrilled to note the sports activities
that they can undertake in their tours to the Caribbean islands.
Truly, the Caribbean is a part of the world where the spirit of life vivifies the very air that makes the palm
trees lining the beaches shake.
